Just like many, I find excuses to avoid things even though I tend to do things out of my comfort zone. So here I am finally starting a blog and excited to make this first post saying I am currently 24 weeks pregnant! I’ve been feeling pretty good so far: mild morning sickness, lots of fatigue, crankiness and so forth in the first trimester and now that I am in the second, the energy has increased along with aches and pains. Symptoms seem to be happening sooner than the first which makes me wonder, how are the next roughly 20 weeks going to go!? I have a physical job, I love to exercise which helps me physically and mentally and I have a toddler to run around after. So this post isn’t about me and my pregnancy, but it’s about one of the reasons that I LOVE CHIROPRACTIC! I truly feel I was able to have the pregnancy I had last time and be able to deliver the way I did because of chiropractic.
As pregnant women when we talk to others about aches and pains we tend to hear, “ I had that before, things are only going to get worse. It’s normal!” Our bodies are completely changing with organs getting smushed to make room for the body constantly growing and stretching out our bellies that our abdominal muscles actual have to separate! Water and blood volume increases, weight increases, chest size increases, hormones are going out of control and our joints are having more laxity. These are just to name a few. Yes these aches and pains are common and yes it’s the “sacrifice” we make for kids. But it doesn’t have to be the “norm.” What if someone told you there was a way to help with these symptoms, so you can try to work till the end (this is if there are no other complications), you can continue to exercise (may need to modify or slow down), and can be present with your other kids and partner. Chiropractic has down this for me.
The specific technique I practice and find in a chiropractor for myself is called the “Webster Technique.” I was taught this technique through the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) where I took multiple seminars furthering my education about pregnant women and caring for pediatrics in practice. The Webster Technique is a non-aggressive adjustment to help open up the pelvis to allow more movement for the baby and help with the alignment for the pelvis. This helps alleviate aches and pains associated with the pelvis and low back. Along with adjustments, muscles and ligaments are checked to take pressure off the growing belly and again, to help mom have less pain as the pregnancy progresses. This is not just for the low back and pelvis but chiropractic care can benefit headaches, neck/shoulder pain, breech position due to Pelvic Misalignment, pubic symphysis pain, improvements in biomechanics and more. Seeing a chiropractor has many benefits for everyone especially pregnancy even if you are having minimal aches and pains. People have reported a more positive pregnancy, easier delivery and has help the recovery time.
Benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy:
- Restoration of balance in the pelvic bony structures, muscle and ligaments.
- Decrease pain caused my improper biomechanics
- Reduces interference to the nervous system, which control all the organs and body functions
- Pelvic balance allowing the baby room to develop with minimal restrictions
- Potential for an easier delivery and recovery
Doesn’t that sound amazing!? What’s holding you back from feeling your best? If this is something you’d like to discuss further as to how chiropractic care can benefit you and your pregnancy or someone you know, give our office a call! My plan will be going to my chiropractic till the end of pregnancy whether or not I am feeling amazing or need pain relief.
